Meyer Hatchery Brand Ambassador Sylvia from The Chicken Village is here today to take us on a tour of her chicken coop.
Chicken Coop Village
Sylvia has quite the little village too! She has a total of 4 coops with 3 runways. She coops her birds according to groups instead of mingling the different ages.
Her main chicken coop is for her “older ladies” which almost makes me wish that I was a hen! It is decked out in some quite beautiful decor, including chicken curtains. Sylvia recycled an old playhouse into this adorable coop, complete with little vintage-looking windows, protected with hardware mesh. She can collect their chicken eggs from the outside of the coop and have options for laying eggs on the inside. She can lock her girls in at night for added protection.
The next coop is a pre-built chicken coop/run, which she added stain on for extra weather protection. It houses a grouping of two younger hens. The run is further enclosed to keep one group in its own special area. For further protection, the two coops are surrounded by a nicely covered additional run that protects them from rain and predators. The roof is made of a nice corrugated vinyl and hardware mesh for the walls. It provides excellent ventilation, with a great level of safety from most predators.
Additional Christmas lights are hanging from the roof, providing a great amount of light, as desired to extend “daylight” for her birds as well as lighting the path in case she needs to check on them after dark. Along the outside edges of the runways, a mesh is buried to prevent any predators from digging in. During the winter Sylvia covers the windows with plexiglass to keep in additional heat.
The next two coops are both pre-fabricated coops, also covered with the stain and well protected from predators. In one coop the ladies even have their own little cozy chair to roost on the chair armrests.
Sylvia has quite an amazing Chicken Village for happy, healthy, well-protected hens! Check out her coop tour below!
