Flies are an equal-opportunity nuisance to all flock owners alike. Not only do they bother the flock, but they also frustrate the flock tenders! Let’s discuss some great ways to keep the fly population down to a minimum in your coop and run!

  1. Keep Your Coop Clean and Dry
Keeping a clean and dry coop is very important for minimizing flies. If you have damp bedding and old kitchen scraps the birds didn’t finish, the flies will love your coop. Practicing good animal husbandry can make a big difference in your overall fly population.

2. Outdoor Fly Traps
One of the most common methods of fly control is an outdoor fly trap. There are many different sizes and brands available. They have a fly trap at every price point as well! It is pretty exciting to see just how many flies you have kept away from your birds. A lot of the fly traps are also reusable, so you can save yourself some time and money!

3. Fly Strips or Ribbons
Another great way to keep the flies at bay is fly strips or ribbons! Hang them inside of the coop, outside in the run, or anywhere you are having issues with flies. They are simple to use and work instantly. While they aren’t reusable, they are relatively inexpensive.

4. Fly Spray Units
A fly spray unit mounted in the coop or run works wonders when it comes to keeping the fly population under control. These are easy to install and most refills will last you a full 30 days.  Pop in a can of spray and forget about it for the next month. This method is one of my favorites, as it lasts the longest in my coop.

5. Natural Fly Repellents
There are also some natural ways to repel flies. Plant herbs and shrubs around the run or coop, such as lemon balm, citronella, mint, basil, lavender, or rosemary. Their aromatics can keep flys and other insects from wanting to bother your flock! Essential oils are another great defense against flies! Using the aforementioned scents can work wonders, as can vanilla!

6. Additional Fly Control Tips:
– Trying lime in the coop or adding some diatomaceous earth to the chicken’s feed, can also help control your fly population.
– Remember not to overfeed, as leaving leftovers can draw flys and other insects in.  Feeding any kitchen scraps outside will also reduce the number of flies you attract.

As you can see, there are plenty of options for reducing the number of pesky flies in your coop. Try some of these methods and see which works best for your space. A fly-free coop is a happier, healthier environment for everyone involved!
