Amazing Egg Bread

Ingredients

  • 4 to 4 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons table salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 large eggs (slightly beaten)
  • Egg wash: 1 egg yolk plus 1 teaspoon milk (whisked together)

Instructions

  1. In a stand mixer bowl, combine 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar and salt; mix well. Heat water, milk, and butter until 120-130°F. You can do this in a saucepan or microwave. Slowly add to the flour mixture blending on a slower speed. Add beaten eggs – one at at time, until fully incorporated. Mix for 5-8 minutes until the dough is smooth.
  2. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl and turn to grease top. Cover and allow to rise for 1 hour (until the dough is doubled in size)
  3. Punch down dough. Divide into 3 parts. On a lightly floured surface, roll each third to a 15-inch rope. Braid the dough, making sure to pinch ends and tuck them under to seal. Cover and allow to rise again for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  5. Brush with egg wash. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. Remove and allow to cool completely before enjoying!
