Getting Turkeys To Fair Weight

Raising turkeys for fair can be an enriching experience for youth. Several factors come into play to make sure they make the required weight. Consistency is key, as any neglect can cause the turkey to fall behind in weight and size. Be sure to follow your fair regulations for a turkey project. Most have date parameters for when they are to be hatched, minimum/maximum weight requirements and turkey breeds allowed. Reach out to your 4h leader or County Extension agent for specifics.

Brooding:  Turkey Brooding 101

Ideal brooding and housing conditions are important for the steady growth of poults. When they first arrive, ensure the brooder is set up 24 hours in advance and the temperature is steady at 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Electrolytes for the first week are encouraged, as poults tend to be less hardy than chicks. Dip the beak of each poult in the water to show him how to locate it.

Housing

Once poults are 6-7 weeks of age, it is time to move them to a larger area. Make sure they are protected from cold drafts; this can cause stress, weight loss, or even death. Confined birds need at least 3-4 square feet per bird. Ensure the shelter has at least three sides and a stable roof to protect them from the elements.

Water

Keep water in front of them at all times. Make sure to clean the equipment frequently to avoid any fungus or algae buildup. Dirty water will prevent the birds from growing to their full potential. Turkeys can drink a quart or more of water daily in the last 6-8 weeks before processing age. Water intake directly impacts feed consumption and conversion.

Diet: Turkey Expense & Weight Log

A poult’s feed will vary by age. Below are the recommended guidelines by age in weeks.

  • Hatch – 4 Weeks: Turkey/Gamebird Starter 27% Protein
  • 4 Weeks – Process: Turkey/Gamebird Grower 22% Protein

Growth Monitoring and Additional Feeding

  • At 8 weeks of age, you should start weighing them weekly to chart their progress.
  • You can also top dress their feed with Rolled Corn 3-4 times a day and give them an ounce of shelled peanuts once per day. These additions help finish the turkey and enhance growth.
  • Top dressing their feed will also stimulate them to eat several small meals during the day rather than gorging themselves.

Feeding During Hot Weather

During hot weather, try to do daily feedings early in the morning or late at night when it is cooler. Eating and digesting feed causes a bird’s temperature to rise, during high temperatures, this can cause heat stress.

Show Selection

The time has come to select the bird to take. Aside from a clean bird, be sure to consider the following.

  • No broken wings, bruises, open wounds or blistered feet
  • Bird weight, does it meet guidelines?
  • Compare the breasts of each turkey. Select wide and rectangular with a straight keel bone. The width, depth, and length should resemble a U shape with thickness running along the length of the turkey.

Raising any type of animal is important as you learn through experience, and it gives a sense of responsibility. Taking the time to consistently care for and monitor your turkey will give you the best chance of success at the fair.
