Silkies are one of the most popular bantam breeds at Meyer Hatchery. Their friendly and docile nature makes them a great option for families, especially those with young children. These fluffy chickens are easy to handle, and their soft feathers help prevent panic in little ones if they flap their wings.

Appearance & Egg Production

Silkies can come in an array of beautiful colors. At Meyer Hatchery, we offer Blue, Black, Splash, and Calico varieties. While they are not prolific layers, Silkies lay approximately 2 to 3 small bantam-sized beige or off-white eggs per week.

One of the most charming traits of Silkies is their strong broody instinct. They love to sit on eggs and hatch chicks, making them egg-cellent mothers! Special Care Considerations

Silkies have unique care requirements compared to other chicken breeds. Here are a few key points to keep in mind:

  • Sleeping Arrangements – Silkies cannot jump onto high roosts, so they need a safe sleeping area at floor level.
  • Cold Weather Precautions – Their fluffy head feathers can hold moisture and freeze in cold temperatures. In winter, consider trimming or securing their head fluff with a rubber band to prevent “feather-cicles.”
  • Mud Management – During wet seasons, their feathered legs can become excessively muddy. Learn how to manage a muddy chicken run here.
  • Predator Awareness – Due to their dense feathering, Silkies have limited vision, making them more vulnerable to predators, especially aerial threats like hawks. While they enjoy free-ranging, they are best suited for chicken tractors or enclosed runs for added safety.

A Perfect Family-Friendly Addition

Silkies are a lovable and beautiful breed that makes a wonderful addition to any flock. Their friendly nature, unique appearance, and excellent mothering instincts make them an ideal choice for chicken keepers of all ages!
