April Book Of The Month: Homegrown Pantry
Our April book of the month is an excellent selection for gardeners. Homegrown Pantry by Barbara Pleasant helps gardeners select the best plant varieties and determine how many of each crop to plant to supply a typical family for a year.
In the first two chapters, Barbara discusses why growing our food is essential and covers basic food preservation techniques like root cellaring (cold storage), drying and dehydrating, home canning, fermenting, and freezing foods to preserve the harvest.
The final three chapters delve into the specific crops and varieties of those crops that she recommends for a backyard gardener. Chapter three is entirely devoted to vegetables and learning to grow many of the most common vegetables most people enjoy. If you haven’t tried growing your vegetables, you’ll be amazed at the difference in taste and quality that freshly picked vegetables can give you from your backyard. I am particularly thankful that Barbara writes about the common pests that may affect each type of vegetable and how to deal with those.
Chapter four outlines the details of growing fruit. The author gives recommendations for varieties that are easier to grow and more prolific producers. Blueberries, grapes, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and more can be yours with some dedication to tending the plants and following the helpful advice in this book.
The final chapter talks about planting herbs for your homegrown pantry. If you like to cook, having a kitchen herb garden near the back door of your home can save you money and boost the flavor of your culinary creations.
