January Book Of The Month: Homestead Seasonal Planner

The creative team at Meyer Hatchery is excited to announce our very first book in our new Book Of The Month feature. Our favorite book for January is The Backyard Homestead Seasonal Planner by Ann Larkin Hansen.

The Backyard Homestead Seasonal Planner is organized by seasons, with each season further sub-divided into early-, mid-, and late-season; which comprises a total of twelve chapters. At the beginning of each chapter, there is a list of seasonal priorities to accomplish and spaces for you to keep farm notes that may pertain to your homestead specifically. Each chapter also has a section that outlines seasonal chores to be completed during that time of the year. Then each chapter also has a topic of the season that goes further in-depth to help you learn more in a certain area of homesteading, gardening, animal keeping, and more.

Success on a small farm or homestead has a lot to do with timing. We really find this planner to be an invaluable tool to help us keep track of when farm chores need to be done. Did you know that late winter is the right time to prune your fruit trees? Doing so too early in winter may cause damage to the trees from the extreme cold in January. Waiting until late winter is better for the trees. If you are grazing cattle or goats on pasture, by mid-summer it’s time to slow down your rotations? As the grass begins to slow during the long days, higher daytime temperatures, and possible lack of rainfall, it’s important for the health of the pasture not to let animals overgraze the plants.
